RECYSITE

RECYSITE is a 2.5 year Large Scale Collaborative Project cofounded by the LIFE Program, the EU’s funding instrument for the environment and climate action.

- Total Budget: 2.08 M€ (60% funded)
- Duration: July 2016 – December 2018

The Project.

RECYSITE aims to demonstrate recyclability and reuse of a new generation of high performance fibre-reinforced thermoset composites from renewable resources (bio-waste).

This will be possible by combining the background knowledge of all the partners for the eco-design of a novel family of recyclable composite materials from renewable resources.

European strategic sectors (transport and construction) require more sustainable materials and need to fulfil the European regulation in terms of recyclability and end of life. In addition, the scraps generated during manufacturing must be recycled (30% scraps). These sectors are the largest consumers of composite materials (69%) and produce residues that, in the best case, are incinerated to recover the reinforcement material (not without generating an environmental problem).

Thus, European governments, industrial sectors and, finally, end users demand more sustainable, cost-efficient and environmentally friendly solutions.

The RECYSITE consortium proposes a solution to this problem by the validation of new fully recyclable biocomposites obtained from natural resources. In order to solve the described problem three objectives are defined within the project:

•Demonstration of new 100% recyclable and reprocessable composite formulations for maximising recyclability and re-use of composite parts.

•Valorisation of bio-waste residues from renewable resources not competing with food: natural fibres from bio-waste (linseed [flax] fibres) and resins from natural resources (linseed oil and humins).

•Validation of the proposed solution in different strategic sectors: transport and construction (two of the European sectors with more impact on the economy as they involve more than 15% of the jobs and GDP in Europe).

Partnership.

The project is carried out by a transnational partnership comprised of seven members from four different European countries (Belgium, France, Spain and The Netherlands) combining extensive expertise in materials, reinforcing fibres, processing methodologies and production: Centexbel (Belgium), La Zeloise (Belgium), Avantium (The Netherlands), CNRS (France), Cidetec (Spain), Aitiip (Spain) and Sispra (Spain).

Our role.

CIDETEC is in charge of delving deeper in its know-how in 3R composites (repairable, reprocessable and recyclable), in order to use adapted hardeners for biocomposite formulations for recyclable bio-composite materials.
